See you at the pool. See you on the river at some point.

Remember talking about paddling isn’t paddling, only paddling is paddling. Dont wait for others for permission or to organise! Go paddle.

13th June – Cressage to Ironbridge – Sure to finish with running the rapids for those that enjoy that sort of thing!

Shropshire Wildlife Trust’s ‘Love Your magnificent Severn 2018’ tour – the big litter grab.

We will be linking to the marine plastics campaign and will be litter picking from canoe – we are also inspiring Shropshire Wildlife Trust branches to do their own litter pick on a stretch of water near to them. We have teamed up with Marine Conservation Society and will be recording what we collect to feed into their data sets. This will help us understand what plastic comes from where in the marine environment – the best evidence suggests that 80% of marine waste enters via rivers.

We will also be reusing plastic bottles to make a completely recycled canoe, just like this! Telford Canoe Club Members would be very welcome to join us on the tour, get in touch with Luke Neal River Projects Officer, 01743 284 275;

Sea Kayaking Paddle

We have been contacted by the BCU region regards the event as detailed below, maybe of use to those with an interest in the sea.

The WM RDT will organise a two day Sea Kayaking Paddle, on Anglesey, over the weekend on 1-2 Sep 18.  The event is primarily open to those kayakers who have access to their own Sea Kayaks, or to those current paddlers who would like to try Sea Kayaking.  This is not suitable for those individuals who have no previous kayaking experience.

RV Location  The provisional plan is for individuals to travel independently, or in small groups, and meet on Anglesey at Anglesey Outdoors, near Porthdarfarch, Holyhead (LL65 2LP) on Friday evening 31 Aug.

Accommodation   Individuals should make their own accommodation arrangements.  Self-catering accommodation and/or camping can be booked through Anglesey Outdoors direct, either online, or by phone (01407 769351).  Prices range from £22 for a dormitory bed or if camping £7 per person, per night.  Individuals may of course wish to make other arrangements, should sharing a bunk room, or camping not appeal.  All feeding arrangements over the weekend are an individual’s own responsibility.

Attendance  This is not a Sea Symposium event and places are limited, on a first come first served basis, as indicated below:

Grouping   It is planned to split the party into two or possibly three activity/experience groups:

Group 1  – Paddlers with Sea Kayaking experience and with their own or a borrowed/hired Sea Kayak, will conduct some initial refresher safety training, followed by a series of exploration trips on the Saturday and Sunday.  (Max Nos  12 -All paddlers attend at their own risk)

Group 2 – Paddlers with limited, or no Sea Kayaking experience, who have a borrowed/hired Sea Kayak will conduct a series of introduction and safety training sessions, followed by a series of shorter coastal trips, depending on weather, sea state and group ability.  (Max Nos 12 based on a Instuctor:Student 1:6 ratio)

Group 3 – Paddlers who just want to paddle their own existing canoe/kayak on the sea in relatively sheltered conditions, with the possible opportunity to try different sea boats. (Max Nos 12 based on a Instructor:Student 1:6 ratio)

Sea Kayak Hire   We will be investigating the possibility of loaning demo Sea Kayaks for those Application Form who need them.  Sea Kayak Hire is also available from ‘Summit to Sea’, who are based on Anglesey.  I will advise those individuals, who want to loan/hire boats, on confirmation of booking, or when they contact me for further details.  Individuals are free to make their own kayak hire arrangements if they wish to do so.

Individual Costs    All accommodation/camping costs and Sea kayak/equipment hire charges are to be met by individuals.  There is a small BC administrative fee of £15 per person, to cover Coach expenses, Trailer Hire and admin costs.

Application  Applications should be forwarded on the attached proforma to Charlie Miller, Shropshire ACR, who will stream individuals into one of the three groups, on a first come-first served basis, and confirm their places accordingly.
